How to keep your bed linens clean and allergy free.

How to keep your bedding allergy free...

Let’s face it, all of us spend a lot of time in our beds. Being able to lay down on clean bed sheets feels great and fresh. Having clean luxury linens can also reduce facial blemishes that are caused by a buildup of body oils and sweat.

This doesn’t mean you have to change your bed sheets every night. However, there is something a little extra special that comes with slipping into a bed that’s just been made with a fresh, clean set of linens. If you are fortunate enough to have bought some fine European bed linens or, better yet, Italian bed linens, then your bed will feel even more spectacular.

To keep that spectacular feeling going all year long, here are some professional tips to follow:

  • Regardless of the time of year, launder your bed sheets once a week, never dry clean it.
  • Change your pillowcases every three to four days during warmer months. People have a tendency to sweat more during these times and that specifically affects your pillowcases.
  • Also, change your pillowcases every three to four days if you have a cold or the flu since bedding can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which is collected from your body oil, sweat, and even drool.

There are some professional tips to follow when laundering duvet covers and down comforters

  • Launder your Duvet cover, quilt or coverlet every 3 to 4 months.
  • Goose Down comforters should be cleaned every 4 to 6 months.
  • The best place to clean a down comforter is a Laundromat, because the washers and dryers are larger.
    • A larger dryer allows the down comforter to tumble better, which helps it dry quicker and also fluffs up the down cluster.
  • Consider putting a ½ cup of bleach in the wash when cleaning down comforter to kill bacteria and dust mites. However, manufacturers will not endorse this suggestion.

Many people claim that the dust mite is the No.1 cause of household allergies. Here is an illustration of what these creepy things look like.

Dust mites find their way into all bedding

Dust mites and bed bugs can be an extreme nuisance and here are some tips to keep them both out of your bedding:

  • Dust mites are present in virtually all bedding, although the regular cleaning of your linens significantly reduces their number.
  • Bed bugs were almost eradicated in the US 30 years ago, but have since made a return and have become a major problem for some people.
  • Bed bugs have recently caused many problems for hotels. This has not been limited to budget motels as upscale hotels have also experienced bed bug problems.

An antimicrobial mattress cover can minimize the dust mite and bed bug infestations. In the event that you do get bed bugs, immediately sanitize all of your bedding components.
  • Keep in mind that dust mites do not bite, but live off skin dander. Bed bugs actually bite and live off your blood.
